Stone window Italy 1974

A small window in the wall of a chapel built hundreds of years ago from stones collected and looted from the devoted labours of earlier generations.

At the moment of taking this picture I was profoundly aware of the seamless continuity of the act of creation, of how we each rest on the shoulders of those who have come before, and how after a lifetime of work we add only the thinest layer of new lacquer to the collective shared brilliance of our forbears.

Sitting gazing at this old stone wall put the conceits and hubris with which we choose to fill our lives into context.
