PHOTOGRAPHS
Foolishly, I have been careless with the photographs that I have taken since childhood. These galleries contain a selection of some of the few that have survived. They are a fragmentary record of what I notice. Of what obtains and holds my attention. Most were taken with a 6 x 6 Bronica film camera.
For me taking a photograph is a danger, for in doing so it is so easy to forget to see. So easy to become absorbed in the process of composition, of the right light, of position, of timing and the mechanics of the machine that I do not observe what is before me with total undivided attention.
I prefer to draw. To sketch with pencil, pen, brush, pastel. For with hand and eye you truly see. Your hand becomes part of your sight moving in space tracking and feeling for the essence, the nature of what is before you and in the moment recording it on paper.
In the span of time photography is a new medium and in our modern age that is so obsessed with the image it has great power. But, it only records a fragment of reality. It captures only a single dimension. Its trap is in seducing us into believing that its images are complete.
Having said that it is a profoundly potent medium and its velocity is accelerating. I am deeply grateful that I had the presence of mind to take these pictures and to record these points in time.
