Unconscious geometry 1974

The notion of geometry has been with us as a mathematical science for at least 2,600 years.

As a young child with pencil, compass and ruler I was enthralled discovering the wonders of Euclidian geometry in the classroom. A great secret was being shared with me, a profound understanding was being unlocked.

Learning for the first time to predictably, accurately construct ordered form I started to see and feel the world with new eyes. Slowly I began to notice the geometries of the natural forms around me. But these patterns of nature were wildly beyond my tiny skill to unravel.

Once you see with the eyes of geometry it is a quality of all things. This steel high voltage electrical pylon is a quintessential structure of engineering. A structure erected with great economy of material and with a strict discipline of straight lines. Yet peering into its great height from below its manmade geometric order of squares, rectangles, and triangles is clear. An order that parallels that of the structure of a leaf seen when its held up to strong sunlight.

And just as in nature, once we discover a geometric structure that works we repeat it across our world.
