Holiday house by the sea 1978

A holiday encampment. Beside the sea, away from the order and confinements of city, a place to create again.

Holidays are traditionally taken in another place. In another context. Somewhere closer to the touch of the natural world. In places of restoration and recovery. Places where the fetishes of town are suspended.

What is it about our urban lives that we have created that we seek to escape from? What is it about our manmade environments that does not serve fully? How have we come to leave the world of our day to day somehow incomplete? What is lacking, what is left out?

Forced into an estate near but not on the sea this dwelling cranes its neck to see with the candour and clarity of a child. The goal is the sea so it is simply lifted high into the air to view with a directness and simplicity that would never be done within the good taste and decorum of town.

Yet where once a mere cabin was sufficient to holiday today we seek five star luxury. Why has our focus shifted from the setting to the abode?
